Participation of the civil society in ecosystem management

As part of the global ecosystem, humans should have the right to participate in the management of the basis of their existence. However, many people live seemingly decoupled from ecosystem functioning and services. Incapacitated and disempowered with regard to management of land and resources, i.e. ecosystem management, many people do not know why and how they should interfere. Adequate instruments and opportunities are lacking. However, the need for an appropriate participation of the civil society is growing, especially in times of exploding demands and critically scarcer resources as well as in the light of global climate and environmental change.
