Juni 2019: Kahlschlag gegen Nachhaltigkeit.
Clearcutting against sustainability. Study: FSC certification has no positive ecological effects on forest management in Northwest Russia
The paper Ecological effects of clearcutting practices in a boreal forest (Arkhangelsk Region, Russian Federation) both with and without FSC certification published in Ecological Indicators provides evidence that FSC certification perpetuates the business-as-usual clearcutting-based timber mining in primary forests. The study was funded and supported by WWF, which is also by represented by co-authors of the publication, as well as colleagues from the Norther Arctic federal University in Arkhangelsk, Russian Federation. The German-French TV channel ARTE broadcasted a critical 98-minutes documentary on the FSC label, with case studies from Africa, South America, Europe and Asia. The title is "FSC - Forest Stewardship Council: FSC: can an eco-label stop the forestry industry?" (German title: Die Ausbeutung der Urwälder. Kann ein Öko-Siegel die Forstindustrie stoppen?).The Centre supported the producers providing some technical advice. Centre research - in the context of our project in the Arkangelsk Taiga, Russia - plays a role at the end of the documentary.
